Video game buyers guide: Platforming (indystar)
With so much focus these days on running around, solving puzzles involving
family crests and red and blue jewels, and shooting enemies, one would think
that everyone has forgotten the joys of the simple platformer. To the
contrary, platforming remains strong but has undergone a shift. It’s not
longer enough to just run side to side like Pitfall Harry in solitude. Super
Mario 3D Land (3DS, Rated E) Where the term “2.5D” has been used in reference
to side-scrolling games that used three-dimensional polygonal models, it’s the
only real way to describe the gameplay of ‘Super Mario 3D Land.’ While it
features the polygonal look and feel of Mario’s more recent games (especially
‘Super Mario 64’), it also resembles his older 2D games, with the tanooki suit
and flagpoles being obvious callbacks but with more to be found by advanced
