Go Retro With The R4 DS Card And Your Nintendo DSi XL
2 NES Games You Can Play With The R4 DS Card
Emulation is good. No, it’s great. Getting the chance to take your old classic favorites, and playing them on todays newest systems and hand held consoles is a great way to add some games to your game library and get a feel for what great games were like in the past. Being able to get a chance to not only know, but to also play some of the first games every released, like for example, Mario on the NES, gives you a whole new appreciation for how far the game and the series have come.
Just how can your Nintendo DS or Nintendo 3DS play old classic games through an emalator? After all, it’s not like the have an emulator card. But what you can get is something called the r4 DS Card, or R4 3DS Card for the Nintendo 3DS, which will allow you to load and store these emulators and then copy over the games you want to play. These games, naturally, are not the most complex when it comes to graphics, but what they don’t have in graphics they make up for with amazing gameplay that is second to none.
What a lot of the newer gamers don’t realize is that a lot of the games they play today, or the characters in the games they play today, started out on the old NES system. Published and released by the same company, but back when they were working with bits and bytes, and not gigs of space to bring their games to life. So for those of you who may have just entered into the classic gaming world, here are a couple of NES games I suggest you try right away.
1. Bionic Commando
{Bionic Commando was a jump and run scrolling platform game. A lot of the games back then could have you moving left or right, and you could even jump up to get on different platforms. But in Bionic Commando, you actually had to use a grappling hook to move your character up and around the whole screen – and it all scrolled. It was a challenging game, and many nights were spent trying to beat the bosses at the ends of the levels. The game was not unique, in the sense of the story line, the Contra series comes to mind when I think of this game, but the main character has unique abilities that allowed him to jump up or pull himself up onto platforms as I had mentioned. The full screen all direction scrolling is the feature that made this game unique – and totally playable. Just how popular was the game? Popular enough to have remakes made for both the PS3 and the Xbox 360, with more to follow I am sure.

1. Bubble Bobble
This was the game that starred Bub And Bob – familiar characters now in games like Puzzle Bobble, and Bubble Pop. But this was where it all started. The point was that one each of the hundred screens / levels, you could join up with a friend and play together to collect all the jewels and gems, and blow bubbles at the bad guys, which you would have to burst, in order to turn them into a banana jewel, or apple crystal etc… While the new version of this game is different, the original was the most fun I ever had – a puzzle and strategy element was needed to be able to play this game. The reason this game appealed to me was that I could play it for 5 minutes when that’s all the time I had, or I could spend several hours playing it if I could spare that much time – a true pick up and play type of game. It’s also been remade on various other systems, obviously because the game is a lot of fun to play.

1. R-Type
Most would say R-Type is the best – and most difficult shootem up game ever made. The name alone says it all, but in case you don’t know what R-Type is, here’s the rundown. Its the best side scrolling shooter ever made – for any game system, ever! And for good reason. This game was as hard as it was fun – and everyone wanted to be able to play it on their home systems. Not that the home version was any easier than the arcade versions, but it didn’t cost you a quarter every 10 minutes or so just to be able to continue your gaming. A game that was truly filled with lost of fun and excitement – and a whole slew of good frustrations too.}
2. Gyruss
{It was a huge hit in the arcades, and became a huge hit on the NES as well. There’s so much to be said about this game – and much of it has been said already. Much like R-type, this game goes down in my game history books. It was a classic shoot em up, but with a twist. It had a 3D feel to it that no other game had before. Your enemy ships would come from all side of screen and your ship could fly all round the edges of the screen to thwart the bad guys’ approach. Your goal? To go and protect every single planet in our galaxy. It’s hard to describe this game – you really do have to play it to understand what I am trying to say – but be careful – you’ll be hooked!

2. Ghostbusters 2
In 1990 Nintendo thought it would be great to bring a sequel for the original Ghostbusters game – and they were right. Ghostbusters 2 left off where the first game finished, and added a whole slew of new elements to the franchise. Still a game that was part puzzle game, part plaform game. The graphics over the first game were greatly improved as well, making it an even worthier follow up to a game that was extremely popular. Not much more can be said about this game – everyone knows who you’re gonna call, right?}
Now the big question from you may be, how the heck can I play this on my Nintendo DSi or 3DS system? All you need is your hand held system of choice of course. The DS lite, DSi or Nintendo 3DS and either an R4 DS Card or 3DS R4 Card for the 3DS system. The DS does well with this, due to the resolution of the original games, they look just as good, if not sometimes better than they would have looked on your big TV back when it was first released.
