Mario Sunshine can’t read (Nintendos Tech Support Forums)

I went to my friend’s house today and when we tried to put in Super Mario
Sunshine, It played the startup and said “Disc can not be read. Please refer
to Nintendo Gamecube instruction booklet.” He said he didn’t have the
instruction booklet and he was going to get the other gamecube games he has
that don’t work to be fixed (For example, Disney/Pixar Cars and Madden 2002),
but the person can’t fix Mario Sunshine. What’s the issue? Will he have to buy
a new game?
