Apple Death Marketing Campaign: YouTube
I – like many other technology loving geeks out there express quite the grimace of pain whenever I see hi tech products suffer at the hands of YouTubers who see only comedy (and no qualms!) with destroying a brand new, fresh out of the box, fourth generation device. Of those receiving the harsh treatment, it is Apple goods which feature most often.
The most infamous of these Apple device murders has to be the “iPod in a blender” escapades, which occurred as part of the internet “Will It Blend?” marketing cause for the mighty Blendtec blenders. After a quick 5 second blast in the blender, the device was left as nothing more than a fine dust impressive, but no doubt a kick in the teeth for anyone desiring their own iPod touch. The Apple handheldall in one PC tablet; the iPad also suffered the same fate as part of the “Will It Blend” YouTube video campaign.
Jeff King and Chad Knight (two professional skaters) too wanted to put the iPad through a test of durability but rather than choosing one from a range of many kitchen appliances to destroy the £900 digital toy, they instead went for a “Will It Shred?” angle, in which the tablet was moulded into a miniature skateboard. Filmed on a camcorder, we see huge nails drilled into the device in order for the heavy trucks to be attached to the bottom and grip tape is added to the edges of the touch screen. As if that wasn’t painful enough to watch, we then see Knight stand on top of for the first time only for the screen to instantly shatter. Nooooo!
After several failed attempts, the skaters do manage to smoothly ride the iPad deck up and down a half pipe. By this point, not even I could deny the hilarity of witnessing a 6ft man atop the tiny iPad skate board!
